I am an older gay man of color. Growing up closeted in a religious Southern family, I know the pain of telling loved ones you are gay. As a military veteran, I know what it is like to be exposed to many cultures, different kinds of people of different beliefs. I lean into my genuine curiosity and respect for others, to find a way to connect. I am also in a 32-year interracial relationship, navigating complex situations around race, power, identity, and culture. Through therapy and a strong support network, my journey to self-acceptance and finding a secure place in the world for myself has been profound. Being able to integrate that into my life and clinical work gives me intimate insight into the unique struggles of the communities I serve.
