When clients come to see me often they express being “stuck” in one way or another: relationships, daily habits, as well a variety of inexplicable and intransigent affects and bodily sensations. As gradually we unfold the symptoms and sources of their stuckness in treatment together, almost invariably my clients stumble onto larger questions, not least those touching on gender and sexuality. Unpacking these questions takes some time, and requires of clients the willingness to speak to whatever comes to mind, while enduring uncertainty over what our interactions might mean. On the other side of this arduous process, however, my clients can discover their resolve and a sense of purpose before what is unknown, along with the relief of new, unexpected pleasures.
